ONE OF OUR FAVORITE LAKES

Canyon Lake has waterfalls

A lot of people don’t realize Canyon Lake has waterfalls. It’s a real treat at one of our favorite lakes, and it only shows up when we get a wet season.

Where the water comes from

When the Superstition Mountains and Four Peaks get a good snow, the runoff flows into the back of Canyon Lake in multiple places: First Water Creek, Tortilla Creek and La Barge Creek, near the Boulder Recreation Site. When they’re running, you get flowing streams and waterfalls.

The photos here are from the back of Boulder / La Barge.

The best time to go

Late winter into early spring is our favorite time to paddle Canyon Lake. When the water’s flowing, it looks like you’re in a different country.

Wet years vs. dry years

It all depends on the snow. Before the last few dry years, we had four very wet years in a row. We miss it, and we’re hoping this winter brings a wet season so the creeks run again.

Paddling to the back of the lake

During wet season you can paddle to 3 different places with flowing water: Tortilla Creek, Boulder Canyon and First Water.
